I've read tons of P&P fan fiction, and some of them read more like "Perils of Pauline." Others are so predictable, sugar-coated or sex-filled that they get annoying long before I finish. I really enjoyed this book as a completely different spin on the Darcy and Elizabeth story we all know and love. Yes, it's a bit "fairy tale"-like, but this is supposed to be escapist reading for pleasure, isn't it? (I'm contrasting it here to several gothic-inspired dark versions I have read.) I appreciated that there were various twists in the plot that I never saw coming without there being a series of seemingly insurmountable, potentially tragic obstacles. (Enough with one of them being close to death, already!!!) I particularly enjoyed seeing Elizabeth elevated above Darcy's station in life and making him sweat a bit WITHOUT her life being threatened and him rushing in to save the day. Even Lydia's plot line was a whole new variation that came to a very satisfying conclusion. (Far-fetched, but still satisfying for those of us who enjoy a nice romance.) Overall, definitely worth your time.Product details

An Unexpected Legacy edition by Don H Miller Romance eBooks Reviews
1. Not enough of the main characters
2. Poorly written
3. Confusing - thoughts were good but delivery POOR
4. Story line could have worked; again poorly delivered
5. I do not believe any truly P & P fan can appreciate deviating so far from the characters...at least I cannot.
Loved it. I am glad that I read it , despite some of the negative reviews. Enjoyed the showdown between Lizzy and Lady Catherine. Enjoyed Anne's strength. An elevated Elizabeth, what a joy. Yes as some mentioned there were some editing errors. Thanks for the warning. Still enjoyed. I loved that in all his variations, the the principal players are the same, and how he is able to tell all those different s situations.
I agree that there was little in this book that was truly believable, however, that is what makes it fiction. I enjoyed this book. Darcy and Lizzy as the richest couple in England makes me happy. I would like to see another continuing this story, perhaps their honeymoon learning the business, how all the couples on the boat found eachother, etc... But it was good. I would read more from this author.
I have over 100 of the P&P variations and sequels. I too read the sample and still purchased it. What was I thinking? So now Elizabeth is of royal blood and very wealthy. She just took off with the new "Grandparents" and their money with no hesitations. That was just wrong. As though her former life did not even matter - she comes across as a very shallow person. Life is just great, la, de dah. She is going to conquer the world and still be a good mistress at Pemberley, right. Not a good story and shame on me for buying it.
I don't know what is more shocking? The fact that this story was actually published, or the fact that I actually purchased it - even after reading the free sample? I have never written a review before, but for this book I just couldn't help myself - I had to warn you of the disappointing nature of this creation. I should state up front that I have read about 50 Pride & Prejudice variations over the past few months, but after reading a couple of duds I thought I had better be a little more picky by reading the reviews and the sample prior to purchasing. In this instance, I guess I was intrigued enough by the storyline to make the purchase, along with a hope that the writing would improve as the story progressed. I give this book one star only because of the creativity of the plot. I will admit that it was quite clever - an idea that no other authors have considered. Unfortunately the story is such a DRAG to read. There is no pull, no natural flow or dialogue, no investment into the characters. Usually I get so engrossed in these books, I just can't set my down till I'm finished. I take my phone everywhere, reading in line at the grocery store, in waiting rooms, waiting to pick up kids, you name it. But with this book I kept tossing it aside in frustration. I even stopped reading it in order to read a different P&P variation - a very good one - before coming back to this. I kept trying to put my finger on exactly why I disliked it, but here it is It reads like a summary of what the book is about. It's as though the author decided to create a summary of the plot line, and then proceeded to create the entire story in summary format of what was happening. The dialogue stinks, the characters appear to be complete dolts, there is little character development, the story is rushed, and the editing itself is terrible.
So, would you like some "for instances" of poor storytelling? Well, this books starts off after Darcy's ill-fated proposal at Hunsford. Elizabeth and Darcy are both back in London and Darcy has come to the realization that he can't live without Elizabeth and he's not going to give her up. In turn, Elizabeth appears to have forgiven absolutely everything after reading his letter. Their first meeting in London is as though all is forgiven with no discussion, there is no awkwardness, and voila - they are friends. Next in the plot line Lizzie finds out she is not actually a Bennett and just moves on in with her new family. There is no thought given to the inner turmoil most rational people would experience - no anger or disappointment directed toward her real mother, no anger at the Bennett's for deceiving her all those years, no sadness about leaving the Gardiners home in London. Just absolute acceptance, like "Okay, sure I'm moving in with my new grandparents - See ya around Gardiners..." It's just so weird. Then there's the matter of her figuring out in the matter of one evening that she actually is in love with Darcy, and is like "okay, let's get married - right away." And then there's the fact that Georgiana spills the beans in front of everyone that Elizabeth had turned downs Darcy's first proposal. First of all, Georgiana would never do that, and secondly Darcy would be mortified, not laugh it off. There's also the matter of Colonel Fitzwilliam falling madly in love with the character Margaret at first sight, and giving all the thanks to Elizabeth for coming into their lives. These are just a few of the weird, and poorly developed things in the story, that just go on and on. And even with all that awkwardness of writing, the author attempts to throw in very exact details (in an attempt to make it more realistic? I don't know). For instance, the story will state the exact time the characters did something, like leaving at exactly 1000 to visit the modiste, and it will state each of the five people's names that rode into the carriage together - like that improves the story line? What improves a story line is developing the characters, and helping the reader to connect with the characters and feel what they are feeling. There is none of this with this book. And finally, there is too much explanation and re-telling of the events happening. An event will occur, and then a character will completely repeat what just happened to another character. Augghhh, it's just all so frustrating. I so wanted to like this book, and yet I couldn't.
The potential for this story was great, if only a decent editor had been employed, or at least a good friend to offer an honest critique up front. I'm sorry this didn't work out better for Mr. Miller, but I cannot recommend this book to anyone.
A calm change of pace that was enjoyable to read. Elizabeth, due to her unexpected inheritance, is likely to be as wealthy as Solomon. Her reaction to her discovery of her birthright and heritage may be off putting to some as she seems to dismiss the Bennet family (excepting Jane) out of hand. (Yes Don - one 't' and not 2.) This Elizabeth, as in Miss Austen's, is not afraid of embracing her new world and the people she is now related to and still have affection for her family. You will see this when you read of her response to Lydia's accident during her attempted elopement with Wickham. I would enjoy a sequel to this book exploring the Darcy's travels in learning the shipping business Elizabeth will inherit. I encourage JAFF devotees to give this book a chance and see this storyline unfold in a mostly laid-back way and not full of turmoil, angst or violence. To Mr. Miller I would strongly advise, however, that he please consult a thesaurus occasionally to choose substitute words for the words "got" and "get." Those words are used too frequently and they, I believe, are lazy "junior high" level words. Happy reading.
